Consult Your Pharmacist

Understand Your Medications and Double-check Labels

Consult Your Pharmacist

Medications are an important part of diabetes management. Having a relationship with a pharmacist you trust can help build your confidence. Choose one pharmacy at which you order all prescriptions. This can help ensure that your pharmacist will be able to keep track of all of your medications and recognize potential interaction concerns. To be safe, you should do the following:

  1. Each time you get a new prescription, ask the pharmacist to look at your profile and check for interactions.
  2. When you bring home a refill of a medication you have been taking, double-check the name on the bottle, the medication name, and the dose. Also, compare the new pills with the old ones. Pill colors and sizes do change, so if there is a discrepancy, call your pharmacist.
  3. Before purchasing cold remedies, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, or any other over-the-counter products, consult your pharmacist and/or physician. Many commonly used products can interact with medications used to control diabetes, as well as with many other medications.
